The figures released from The Office of National Statistics showed that for March 2012 a total of 6,352 people were registered to receive Jobseeker’s Allowance in the city, an increase from 6,312 in February. BAM Outsource, a direct marketing and sales company, understands from the figures that this rise is contrary to national figures which showed that unemployment fell by 35,000, still leaving 2.65 million people without jobs.A spokesperson for BAM Outsource said of the problem, “These figures are very disappointing for Peterborough as a city, particularly when nationally things are looking more and more promising.” These sentiments are echoed by Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson who said, “Unemployment in Peterborough is still too high, although I believe it has stabilised. We need to carry on tackling joblessness by attracting new businesses to the city and increase training and apprenticeships especially for young unemployed people.”
The 6,352 people on Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) represents 5.6 per cent of the population of Peterborough and there are almost twice as many men than women on JSA. BAM Outsource learnt that the highest ever figure dates back to February 1986 when unemployment in Peterborough stood at 9,676.
The spokesperson for BAM Outsource continued, “We know that a lot of work has been going on in the city to prepare young people better for work and in time we hope that this will have an effect. The difficulty is that there is a vicious circle of young people not being able to get jobs because they don’t have experience, and not being able to get experience because they don’t have jobs. More entry level positions are needed to enable young people to end this cycle.”
