BriefingWire.com, 1/29/2015 - Common problems with your Garage Door

Sensors

Automatic garage doors have an interesting safety feature built into their design. A laser beam runs across the width of the frame, usually at a low height so that pets and children will trigger it. When the beam is broken, the door is either stopped in its tracks or prevented from starting to close.

A garage door which is failing to close may have a problem with its sensors. Check to make sure that there is no debris that may be blocking the path of the laser beam. Then check the laser beam and the receiver as they may have become misaligned. Usually, they show a green light to show that they are paired up which turns red when the beam is broken. If the beam is not reaching the sensor, either because it has been moved or the receiver is dirty then your door will not close. Try cleaning the sensors and checking their alignment. Hopefully, this will allow your door to close.

Remote Not Working

You have been sitting in your car, trying to get the door to open and nothing is happening, forcing you to go inside and press the button there, before you can get inside your car and park up. Since the door has opened, the problem does not lie in that mechanism and as such, you should try changing the batteries in your remote.

If your door can open and close using the inside switch, and the remote is transmitting, then the problem likely lies in the remote receiver box. Like with your door sensors, make sure the receiver box and the antenna is kept clean and in place so that it can receive the radio signal from the remote.

Lastly, it is also possible that either the box or the remote has changed frequency and will need to be reprogrammed. Most remotes will have come with instructions on how to go about doing this.

Opening and Closing Unexpectedly

As mentioned above, garage doors receive radio signals from the remote. If your door is opening and closing randomly, then it could be because something is interfering with those signals, usually another radio device or that the remote is malfunctioning. I knew of one guy whose remote had slipped between the cracks in his cushions, causing it to be pressed whenever he sat down. He spent hours going back and forth between the garage and the sofa as every time he closed it, it would snap open the second he sat down. Sometimes problems are hard to solve and sometimes the solution is incredibly silly.

If you have tried these things to no avail and you happen to live close by Kansas City, Independence, Shawnee, Smithville, Parkville and Gardner View and find yourself in need of garage door repair then you should look up Kansas City Garage Door Experts.
