Springtime Hazards for Our PetsWith the warmer weather of spring upon us, pet owners need to be aware of possible springtime hazards for their companion animals. Consider these guidelines from a vet to keep your pet safe, happy, and healthy this season.
Spring Pests
With spring comes the waves of pests that like to attach themselves to our pets. Ticks, fleas, and worms are only a few of the more common offenders. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on all preventative medications, including heartworm, flea, and tick medicines. Ask your veterinarian for the full regimen that your pet needs.
Lawn and Garden Care
Are you spraying down your lawn or garden with fertilizer, pesticides, or herbicides this spring? Keep your pet indoors while you’re doing so, and don’t let them come outside and come in contact with treated grass or plants. Ingesting the chemicals we spray on our lawns can seriously harm pets.
Spring Cleaning
Spring is a great time to do some cleaning around the house. Just make sure you’re using all chemicals and cleaning solutions properly—read the package directions for proper use guidelines. Also make sure you store all cleaning solutions, bleach, solvents, and paints safely away where your pet can’t get into them.
Window Safety
If you want to open your home’s windows to let some of the warm spring air in, make sure there are sturdy screens at each one. Every year, cats fall out of improperly-screened or open windows, resulting in serious injury, broken bones, or even death. They may be graceful, but they’re not infallible.
Allergic Reactions
We aren’t the only ones who have to deal with allergies as the springtime rolls around—the pollen, dust, and dander can also affect our pets. If you think your pet is sneezing and sniffling more than he should be, contact your veterinarian’s office to set up an appointment.
