Why damp in your home ...
BriefingWire.com, 10/24/2018 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bristol, UK - Damp is a notorious problem that we face in the UK. Due to the amount of rainfall we get in, we have a tendency to develop damp in our homes. Cracked roof tiles allow rainwater to seep into the home inducing moisture in a home. Heavy rainfall can seep into areas of the home which create spots of stagnant water. This water either sits or seeps into the home, causing excess moisture inside of the home. Excess moisture is the cause of damp, whether it be from rainfall or from leaky plumbing. – For more information about our damp proofing service, please visit our page on Damp Proofing Bath

Damp is a bigger problem than most of us realise it is. It isn’t just a problem visually since it affects the structural integrity of your home. From timber to masonry, damp can inhibit conditions that will threaten the structure of any building. Brickwork may seem sturdy but damp & excess moisture will gradually weaken mortar.

Damp has been the literal downfall of thousands of buildings. It’s an unassuming problem that doesn’t get the attention it deserves but can be the death of a building. Timber is also a threat when it comes to damp since damp will allow for the growth of rots like wood rot & dry rot. These rots latch grow & eat away structural timber. This weakens the timber to the point it crumbles & loses structural integrity. Repairing rot damage is costly, but it isn’t as expensive as rebuilding an entire roof.

Can I stop damp?

Finding damp in its early stages is the best way of preventing it from damaging your home. It’s hard to detect any structural faults when there isn’t a problem, so it’s common that first sightings of damp reveals structural faults. Dripping water is the first red flag as it shows there could be a leaking pipe allowing water into the home. Leaking roof tiles will be harder to spot/detect but if you have access to your attic, you will be able to spot any large leaks.

Early signs of damp can range from peeling wallpaper to patches of discolouration on a wall. Patches of mould is also a key sign of mould since it shows mould is capable of growing. You may also spot patches of mould on curtains & other fabrics around the home.
