Hot riveting processes for plastics have evolved over time with bdtronic GmbH (formerly, Bartec Dispensing Technology) leading the way with "BHS hot stamp" and "BHS hot jet". These are hot stamp riveting and hot air riveting processes respectively. One of the leading manufacturers of precision dispensing machines and robotic dispensing equipment, Bartec recently added a range of machines for hot riveting to its inventory.According to bdtronic’s spokesman, the company had recently carried out investigations to find the optimum process values in hot riveting processes. This included temperature range, rivet dome geometry, stamp shape and other values, along with Chemnitz University of Technology, and a renowned manufacturer of engineering plastics. Tests revealed that the "BHS hot stamp process" possessed the highest pull-off values as a contact riveting process.
Bdtronic’s spokesman said, “The results show that since plastics have poor conductivity, plastics must be homogenously to the forming temperature in order to achieve the optimum structural composition. We have been able to come up with a new design guideline, which is a compromise between minimum cycle time and a maximum strength, which has led us to offer two hot riveting processes the BHS hot stamp" and "BHS hot jet". They are single-cycle processes, are easy to integrate in a space saving way and do to allow any distortion between heating and forming. Both types are designed for electronic products.”
According to bdtronic sources, their hot riveting systems feature internal cooling to ensure the highest standards of security during processing of different types of parts. These units adopt a different method from traditional machines where the stake is cooled internally with air after deforming the boss. These systems offer a wide range of benefits such as temperature regulated riveting, and a high degree of process control. The company’s spokesman adds, “The process also results in no stress on the surrounding areas while it is material dependent as well. Another advantage is the high degree of process control. There are also no operating costs involved.”
bdtronic’s offers different types of Standard hot riveting machines, single and multi-head systems, and stationary or with 3-axis coordination systems. This includes integrated BHS units for automatic and manual work stations ideal for small volumes of production. Another popular hot riveting machine is the tabletop version with electric heating stake. The B2000-H and B5100-H are designed for hit production volumes and are packed with features that include programmable temperature profile, and depth and current measurement. The B5600-H comes with multiple dispensing heads. The company also offers a range of silicone foam and polyurethane foam dispensing units.
