Cervical Cancer Numbers Showing Improvement
Women can play a major role in stomping out cervical cancer by reporting in for routine pap examinations.

BriefingWire.com, 9/21/2016 - The founder and lead surgeon of the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise talks about prevention of cervical cancer.

Decatur, TX – The rate of cervical cancer cases diagnosed in the United Sates has been on the decline over the past few decades. While the 50 percent reduction in new cases is cause to celebrate, doctors say there’s still more work to be done. With an estimated 13,000 new cases and 4,000 deaths reported each year, prevention is seen as critical for moving the needle even further in the right direction.

“Thanks to routine screenings for cervical cancer and the introduction of HPV vaccinations, major strides have been witnessed over the past few decades,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “Even so, it’s important to remember this disease is far from beaten and women and men alike can both play roles in reducing the numbers even more.”

Women can play a major role in stomping out cervical cancer by reporting in for routine pap examinations. This simple test often enables doctors to catch cervical cancer in its earliest, non-invasive form, enabling highly successful treatment. At present, it is recommended that women age 21 to 65 undergo pap smears at least once every three years. HPV testing may also be recommended for women age 30 to 65.

Vaccines to protect against the human papilloma virus or HPV are also recommended for both boys and girls starting around the age of 11. These vaccines are meant to prevent certain forms of cancer that have been strongly linked to HPV.

“This three-shot series can help prevent human papilloma virus-related cervical cancer while also offering protective benefits against other HPV-related cancers, such as oral cancer,” says Dr. Echt. “It is hoped that someday preventative measures will help put an end to cervical cancer.”

Parents of young children are urged to talk with their healthcare providers about HPV vaccinations. This series of shots is now covered by most major insurance carriers because of its long-term protective benefits.
