J.D. Power and Associates recently conducted a study to measure the satisfaction of consumers when receiving maintenance or repair work done at manufacturer’s service departments. The study was based on a 1,000 point scale, with a category for luxury brands, and another for mass-market brands. The responses were gained from surveys of over 91,000 owners and lessees of 2008-2012 model year vehicles, and were conducted between October and December 2012.The average score for the luxury brand was 846 out of 1,000, and the average for mass-market brands was 789. The overall average was 797, which is ten points higher than the previous year.
In the luxury car category Cadillac scored 858 and missed gaining the top spot by only 4 points. At twelve points over the average for luxury cars Cadillac has done an excellent job satisfying their customers. Other notable luxury brand included Acura, which was scored at 852, Audi at 846, and falling below average were BMW at 842 and Mercedes-Benz at 832.
Chevrolet scored an 806, which is seventeen points above the average in the mass-market category, has also done an excellent job servicing their customers. Also in the category for mass-market brands, GMC received the top score at 819, Nissan scored a 797, Ford came in just below the average score at 786, and with a score of 780 Toyota scored nine points below average.
The study found that car owners visit their dealerships service department an average of 2.6 times per year, mostly for routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations. Because visits are more often for maintenance than vehicle repairs, the overall customer satisfaction index score has gone up. The average satisfaction score for maintenance visits is 806, compared to repair visits at 768.
