Dr Max Mongelli will be presenting his latest research in the field of perinatal ultrasound at the forthcoming World Congress in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to be held in Rome, Italy. This work includes the ultrasound detection of the abnormally large baby (macrosomia), a new method to assess fetal size and birth weight, and amniotic fluid as detected by ultrasound.Dr Max Mongelli underwent undergraduate medical training at the University of Sydney. This was followed by specialist and clinical research training in the NHS, United Kingdom, where he developed an interest in perinatal medicine and screening for fetal growth disorders.He has worked in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and in Singapore. His main interest is in obstetrics, both clinical and research. He contributed to the development of the software for the customised antenatal growth charts, which are now widely used in the NHS and overseas. His other research interests include clinical applications of computer modelling, biostatistics and evidence-based medicine. He has co-authored a book on fetal growth with Professor Tambyraja (“The Low Birth Weight Baby”) in Singapore, and over 50 papers in mainstream medical journals. Many of these have been presented at international conferences such as the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Recently his interest have extended to early pregnancy problems such as miscarriage,ectopic pregnancy and early fetal growth. He has been involved in the teaching and mentoring of medical students and junior doctors. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
