Fines Increase for Towing a Horse Trailer in the UK
The number of fines being issued for drivers towing horse boxes are still increasing, according to Trailer Training London.

BriefingWire.com, 6/18/2014 - Trailer Training London provides drivers throughout the London with the necessary training needed to tow a trailer legally in the United Kingdom. The company has an experienced and knowledgeable team that work with customers to help them pass their test with ease.

This company offers a host of driving courses from beginner driving lessons to trailer training and LGV training to PCV training and so much more. The company is members of DIA, MSA, IAM and RoSPA. The driving instructors are led by Stephen Bell, a DSA approved driving instructor.

As on 19 January 2013 drivers who want to tow a horse trailer need a B and E driving entitlement. The majority of vehicle owners driving on the road don’t realise that they are towing illegally.

Drivers who obtained their driving licenses after 1 January 1997 are only entitled to tow a trailer of 750kg with a combined vehicle and trailer weight of 3,500kg. The average horse box can be around 2,700kg or more, which requires these drivers to take a towing test in order to comply with the law.

Drivers who received their licenses before 1 January 1997 are allowed to tow a combined weight of 8,250kg, which means a minivan with a 750kg trailer, they would also need a B and E entitlement in order to tow a horse trailer legally on the road.

A spokesperson from Trailer Training London said “Many of the customers that come to use for training to tow their horse trailers have already been fined. In most cases they are only moving their horses to a new field a few miles away and don’t realise they are breaking the law the minute the car and trailer hit the road.”

Trailer Training London advised that many of their customers have already received fines and even with news spreading of the new towing laws, many people are still taking a risk because they’re only towing once every now and again. This has led to an increase of fines and penalty points for the drivers.

The company advised that anyone who intends towing a trailer, whether for business or personal use, should consider getting adequate training to reduce the risk of points and fines, possibly even disqualification.
