Victoria, Australia, September 2014 - Detector Inspector is a leading name in the smoke alarm maintenance industry. Detector Inspector always strives to discover and acquire revolutionary ways of improving their service quality. Recently, Victorian fire agencies, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Melbourne Fire Brigade (MFB) teamed up to design and deliver an awareness campaign, educating the public on the ‘mistakes’ that commonly lead to incidents of house fires, as well as the frequency of those mistakes. On 3 July 2014, an interesting and interactive Safe Mistake Zone campaign was launched on the streets of Melbourne. Typically, children are the target of home fire safety campaigns, but in this campaign adults were the focus - educating them about the things they do carelessly, which can ultimately cause a fire. The most interesting aspect of this fire safety awareness campaign was the use of humour and wit to convey a very important message.
The statistical data in June 2014 clearly illustrated that out of all the fire incidents occurring in Victoria, 283 could have been prevented or were avoidable. Gavin Thompson, CFA Deputy Chief Officer commented asserting that “some of the common culprits for fire accidents include: smoking, cloth or fabric made of inflammable material kept close to heaters, unattended cooking and defective electric appliances.”
The team at Detector Inspector applaud this campaign initiative and the way it demonstrated the numerous unsafe mistakes which cause fire accidents. Some very simple, though important messages were delivered through both the physical campaign at Federation Square – which has since been taken on the road – and the dedicated Safe Mistakes website. Through this campaign the message around the importance of smoke detectors and smoke alarm maintenance was also reinforced. A smoke detector gives prior intimation of a fire, giving people the precious time needed to escape from their home without injury.
