John Chicks’ Great ReturnJohn Chick wanted to arrange a charity challenge that would catch people’s attention, in his own words “I wanted to do something above and beyond the ordinary”. After cycling an exhausting 10,000K to the Turkish capital, Istanbul and back, John’s efforts have raised a colossal amount for his chosen Welsh charities: Velindre Cancer Centre and Ty Hafan’s children’s hospice.
The Journey
When John initially informed his family of his ambitious cycle they were shocked to say the least, his wife hit the floor (literally). However, very supportive of his motives his family waved John goodbye on the 20th April, along with Welsh sporting greats and crowds of supporters and staff. Now, after experiencing an earthquake in Italy, swimming nude, spending a night with the winner of the Serbian Big Brother and fortune telling from a chicken John is coming home!
Achievement
His achievement is all the more impressive as he’s the first person to attempt this route going over the Swiss and French Alps.
The Assembly’s Head of Members’ Business Support took an unpaid career break in order to complete the charity bike ride after losing and seeing people suffer close to him he chose to do something big to make a difference.
It has raised more than £12,000 for Ty Hafan, which cares for children with life-threatening illness, and Velindre Hospital which cares for patient suffering from cancer.
Thursday, 9th August 2012
The long awaited return is scheduled between 12:00pm and 12:30pm on Thursday 9th August at The National Assembly Office in Cardiff Bay. John deserves a huge crowd to welcome him home on the steps of the Senedd next Thursday, we ask all press to publicise this.
Get Involved
After a gruelling three months of cycling across Europe and three pairs of sunglasses late but amazingly no punctures, John is finally returning back to his Welsh family and friends! We want to give John a deserving welcome home, as the welsh hero he is.
Cyclists can join John on the final leg of his journey on the 9th of August along the Taff Trail. His colleagues are geared up with bikes ready to surprise him.
He will cycle along the Taff Trail until he reaches the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, where he started his epic journey five months ago.
