Milk can boost memory and brain power
For long, most of us have known that milk helps build healthy bones and teeth and supplies essential

BriefingWire.com, 12/08/2016 - For long, most of us have known that milk helps build healthy bones and teeth and supplies essential nutrients such as protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. However, not many know that dairy products such as fresh tasty dahi, full fat organic milk, healthy double toned milk, yoghurt, curd, cheese, etc. can also boost memory and brain power.

Evidence to this has been made available via a recent research. Details and findings of this research have been published in the International Dairy Journal. The research shows that people who consume milk and milk products 5 to 6 times every week, fared better in memory tests, in comparison to people who took little or no dairy.

At the beginning of this research study, more than 900 people, including men and women in the age group of 23 to 98, were randomly selected for the study. These people were asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire, which asked specific questions about their diet, what all they consumed and in what quantities. Everyone was required to list out their dairy consumption in detail, irrespective of whether they consumed more or little of dairy products. At this point of time, these people were not informed about the actual purpose of the study. After everyone had filled and submitted their forms, each one was asked to complete a set of tests, aimed at ascertaining their memory, concentration and learning abilities.

The study revealed that people who regularly consumed dairy products such as fresh tasty dahi, full fat organic milk, healthy double toned milk, etc. performed better in the memory tests. The group with the least dairy consumption turned out to be the worst performer in the memory tests. Researchers feel that presence of magnesium in milk might be a factor responsible for increased brain power among regular dairy consumers. They also said that more research studies will be needed to conclusively prove this aspect of milk.

The findings of the study have implications on everyone’s lives. For children, it means that they can perform better in education if they consume dairy products regularly. For the youth, it implies that they can score better in competitive exams and other tests. For office goers, it means that they can excel in their career faster, as compared to their colleagues. For the elderly, it holds immense benefits, as they can reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Just a glass of milk a day can make all the difference.
