MPUH - CRS Felicitates Cadaveric Organ Donor Family Members
Last year, the department of organ transplantation, MPUH CRS has successfully carried out 6 cadaveric organ transplantations. We have retrieved twelve kidneys, twelve eyes and four livers from donors.

A organ (cadaver) donors felicitation programme was held on 6th January 2013 at the JPAC auditorium of CRS - Muljibhai Patel Urology Hospital best urology hospital in India. Last year the hospital had performed six cadaver organ donor transplantations. Four donors were from the surrounding ICUs and trauma centers whereas the other two donors were from Surat. A total of ten cadaver kidney transplantations have been done at MPUH CRS. Three livers and two kidneys were also shared with Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad. Eyes were donated to local Eye Bank.

The honble Collector of Kheda Mr M V Pargi graced the function as the Chief Guest. The programme was attended by more than 150 people associated with our cadaver organ donation campaign. Six organ donor families were invited and felicitated for their noble decision of donating organs of their brain past children or relatives. Dr Mahesh R Desai, Managing Trustee and Medical Director of the Hospital MPUH CRS welcomed the family members and congratulated them for taking very important decision at the time of their grief. Dr R B Sabnis, Chairman, Department of Urology stressed the importance of organ donation in the society as there is a steady increase in the number of patients with CKD (Chronic kidney disease). Dr Shishir Gang, Chairman, Department of Nephrology pointed out various reasons for kidney failure, and the superiority of transplantation over life long dialysis. Dr. Jigish Vyas, Incharge of organ transplantation introduced each family and felicitated the families at the hands of the District Collector. Mr M V Pargi congratulated the transplant team of MPUH CRS for starting the mission of cadaver organ donation.

Process of Organ Donation:

The whole organ donation process can be for suitability it is divided into four distinct phases.

1. Identification

2. Certification

3. Screening

4. Maintenance of donor

Pre - Fundamentals for a Good, Efficient & Actual Organ Procuring Center are:

1. Proper management

2. Motivated team

3. Adequate and correct knowledge

4. Mutual support/liaison with other agencies

Within a distance of 6 to 24 hours a team of specialists inspect the brain stem damage separately and verify brain stem damage. Only after this various organs of an individual are used for transplantation to other waiting patients.

The Success of the whole process will depends on

1. Motivation from - nurse, doctor, social worker

2. Presence of mind of relatives

3. Facility for organ donation

Statistically, the current organ donation per million for cadaver in India is 0.05 per million (about 50 Cadaver donors per year). At 1 per million donation rate we would have 1100 organ donors.

Cadaver organ donation programme held at MPUH - CRS

This program was conducted in MPUH-CRS with a view to increase awareness about cadaver organ donation, MPUH CRS conducted a symposium inviting doctors of surrounding prestigious institutions of Kheda and Anand districts. At the end of the programme, it was concluded that cadaver organ donation should be promoted. Greater awareness needs to be spread in the society. One should carry a donor card.
