Non-profit organization offers computer training to students
Non-profit changes students lives one computer at a time

BriefingWire.com, 10/03/2015 - Loaves, Fishes & Computers and 35 students from the Dream Academy are teaming up to refurbish 60 computers in Salinas before the holiday season. Students are refurbishing computers while attending computer training workshops at Alisal High School. “Loaves, Fishes, & Computers, Inc. has been making a big difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors here in Monterey County since 2009, said Christian Mendelsohn, Executive Director for LFC. “One computer at a time, one neighbor at a time. LFC has provided more than 1,600 modern, working computers to Monterey County low-income individuals, households, and organizations.”

Who: Loaves, Fishes & Computers and The Dream Academy: Both Salinas-based 501c3 non-profits, hosted by Alisal High School, will be teaching 35 Salinas High School students (70% female/30% male), who are enrolled in The Dream Academy, to refurbish 60 computers at Alisal High School given away to local-low-income families.

What: LFC will teach students how to refurbish 2 computers: one for him/herself, and one computer to another low-income student in the same school. Students will help find and determine those families most in need with help from their school. The students will then contact the families, inform them that they are the recipients of a computer, meet with and orient the family to their new computer during a future holiday gathering event in December (DATE TBD).

When: Monday, October 5th, 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm.

Where: Alisal High School Library, 777 Williams Rd, Salinas, CA 93905.

Why: This project teaches students refurbishing skills, teamwork, project management, and communication skills as well as increasing their self-esteem and leadership capabilities.

How: This project was made possible by raising money from MCGives! 2014, an annual fundraising campaign, which encourages private donations from local residents, made possible by The Monterey County Weekly and The Community Foundation For Monterey County.

Dream Academy: The central mission of the Dream Academy is to inspire, engage, and empower high school students through powerful experiences so they can become the leaders of today. We do this through numerous community service activities, community impact projects, a dynamic speaker's series and the fundraising that students do to take a year-end educational trip to the east coast.

Loaves, Fishes and Computers’ (LFC): mission is to help overcome the digital and economic divides by providing low-cost or no-cost computer systems, technology assistance and computer repair to low-income families, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and non-profit organizations, while providing volunteers a warm and welcoming place to learn, share & grow in the field of Computer Science & Information Technology.
