Search for hallucinogenic substances in Chilean desert mummies
Chilean archaeologists search for psychotropics in hair samples of natural mummies in San Pedro de Atacama, northern Chile
BriefingWire.com, 5/25/2013 -
In an article to appear in the academic periodical Journal of Archaelogical Science a Chilean team of archaelogists report their investigation into the consumption of plant-derived hallucinogenic substances through smoking and snuffing in prehispanic indigenous cultures in Chile. The search for substances was conducted via hair anlaysis of mummies from the Atacama desert in northern Chile (c. 100 B.C. – 1450 AD). Postdoctoral scientist at Universidad de Chile and lead author of the article, Dr Javier Echeverría explains the significance of the findings at www.chileno.co.uk
