Sydney, Australia- September 24, 2014: "At present, it is an extremely lightweight signal and affects less than 1% of the global queries. It carries far less weight as compared to some of the other signals for, let's say, high quality content as we allow webmasters enough time to make the switch over to HTTPS," said the two analysts working with the company.
SSL, or Secure Socket Layer encryption, ensures protection for user privacy and personal information against illegal access by unauthorized individuals. Its value is especially highlighted on eCommerce websites where such sensitive user information as credit card numbers are seemingly at stake.
The move comes on the back of Google's mission for the creation of a better user experience for all customers. "We are also working to ensure that the Internet in general becomes a safer place to work in," Illyes and Bahaji noted. "A major part of it would be by ensuring that the websites people come across as hosted by Google are secure to the maximum possible extent."
Google is encouraging all its webmasters to make the switch over to HTTPS from HTTP in order to ensure safety for users on the Web. Though at present this updated algorithm will affect less than one percent of all queries being made globally, the technology giants have stated that they may look to be strengthening over time in order to encourage more users to make the switch.
Ecommerce websites who do not feature an SSL Encryption should expect a dip in their page rankings. While this may not be attributed to the algorithm signal, it will surely be an indication that less number of users were considering their site to be trustworthy. HTTPS encryption is something users recognize very easily while it serves as signal from the businesses that they care about the privacy of their customers.
It would be a clever business who decides to move quickly and adopt the necessary change.
