Tariq Drabu Worried That GP's are Giving Antibiotics for Toothache in 2016
Tariq Drabu said “it is a concern that a high volume of patients visit their doctor for dental issues, which results in more antibiotics being prescribed for toothache.”

BriefingWire.com, 4/27/2016 - Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon who was born and educated in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Today he is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his busy schedule to tutor and mentor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article which was recently published on a top dental website. The full article.

Tariq Drabu said “More than half of patients visit their general practitioner for dental problems rather than their dentist, which results in them being given antibiotics for toothache. A study conducted by Cardiff University and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board found that many patients visit their GP over their dentist, which results in unnecessary antibiotics being prescribed.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say “Dental issues should not be managed by a doctor, but the doctor will not turn their patient away when in pain. Only a qualified dentist can provide essential treatment such as root canal or extractions and when a patient is in so much pain that they head to their doctor, they are going to need a detailed treatment to relieve the pain. Patients suffering from toothache or any form of tooth sensitivity, really do need to visit their local dentist and not their GP.”

Tariq Drabu in Manchester closed in saying “The biggest concern with this is managing antibiotic resistance, which has been a very hot topic in the medical industry for the past few years. Antibiotics are essential when it comes to fighting infection, but when a patient has too much antibiotics, they build up a resistance which means when they have a serious infection, the antibiotics don't work. Antibiotics should only ever be prescribed in very severe cases.”
