Times Of India reports on Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital – Centre for Robotic Surgery that US Robotic-Surgery Miracles to be seen in Nadiad, Gujarat, India.

BriefingWire.com, 12/10/2013 - The Times of India reported that the “Nadiad hospital will be the site of four major operations to be performed by a top US doctor who specializes in the futuristic discipline of robotic surgery. The doctor is a distinguished figure in America’s medical circles, and a proud native of the Matar village in the Kheda district of Gujarat.

The doctor is Dr. Mihir Desai, an urologist in the US and the director of the Center for Advanced Robotics, University Of Southern California’s Institute Of Urology. Desai is currently in his homeland on a mission.

In the coming days, Desai will carry out the surgeries for kidney and prostate problems. His father, Dr. Mahesh Desai, is a former president of the International Nephrology Society and currently the medical director and managing trustee of Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), Nadiad, where the surgeries will take place. “It is a good feeling to belong to a family which has been in the field of medicine for decades now,” said Desai, whose mother Nalini is also a doctor. So is his wife Rimple, who is an ophthalmologist.

Desai visits India four times a year for special surgeries. For general cases, he does not charge anything. “I try to bring research and breakthroughs of the US to India,” he said. Last year at the MPUH, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated a new website dedicated to robot-assisted surgeries. The minister witnessed live on the screen a surgery being done by Desai in the US. Azad is said to have cancelled his scheduled function in Ahmedabad to observe this surgery.

In 2012, Desai was awarded the Arthur D Smith Endourology Lectureship at the World Congress of Endourology held in Istanbul, Turkey. “I received my MD and master of surgery degree from Gujarat University and was certified in genitourinary surgery in New Delhi,” Desai said. “Later, I trained in advanced laparoscopic urology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation between 2000 and 2003.”

N Bhaskaran, the manager of MPUH said, “We have known Mihir since he was a child. He was a gold medalist in GU and very early in life, became one of the most prolific urologists in the world.”

Desai, who is ranked among the top urologists of the past 10 years, has authored over 100 publications. He is known for his novel techniques in treating ureteropelvic obstruction. He has also developed flexible robotic platforms and the scarless laparoscopic surgery for various urologic conditions.”
