San Francisco, CA - The Goddess Letters (ISBN 9780988-262669), a debut novel by naturopathic physician and author, Vicki Matthews, has received an Honorable Mention Award at the 2013 San Francisco Book Festival. The Goddess Letters was honored on May 18 at a public free day festival and a private evening awards ceremony held at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco.A romantic tale of love and cultural crisis, The Goddess Letters features Chicago economics professor, Rob Harris, and his college lover, the mysterious Selena Wilmington, a famous Hollywood actress whose nightmare visions of cries for help from women of the past become a dangerous reality.
Chicago professor, Rob Harris, knows he has it good: a dream job, a devoted wife, and an adorable daughter. But he risks it all when his first love, the exquisitely beautiful Selena Wilmington, writes to tell him that she needs his help – her terrifying dreams have come to life. Despite his doubts, Rob is drawn into Selena’s haunting world of forgotten knowledge, ancient ritual, and relinquished rights. Eventually, he finds himself face-to-face with Jacobi, a preserver of the male order, who will kill to keep hidden a truth that could change the world. As Rob’s own concepts of reality crumble, so do his once-rigid views on nature, divinity, women’s roles, and even love.
Written with eloquence and an authentic voice, this romantic mystery is a must-read for those who crave compelling drama and adventures imbued with magical realism. Thematically similar to Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, The Goddess Letters also explores how modern society exploits nature as a commodity while simply accepting the patriarchal structure that has become dysfunctional in today's world. Matthews blends historical fact into her fictional tale, using Selena’s visions as a clarion call to modern readers to recognize the need for balance between the masculine and feminine energies within each of us.
“I wrote The Goddess Letters because I realized that, like most people, I accepted it was normal for men to have the greatest access to political and financial power, and for God to be male. We are, after all, a patriarchal culture,” said Matthews. "As I read a great number of books on femininity and society, I realized that there was a whole other way to live, a whole other side to history, and I knew very little about any of it. I decided it was time to join the growing number of voices raised to ask why things are the way they are and how could they be different.”
