Veep's season finale, Tears, ended the first season in true Veep fashion, in chaos. It was a smart move to take the episode out of the Capitol Hill bubble and into Ohio to actually gain some real world perspective. When the VP and her staff return to Washington, Selina immediately rewards Dan with a promotion. During the entirety of his new powers, about a minute, Dan reorganizes the desks in the office and sends out a pre-written press release regarding his promotion.

Everybody wants a return on what they invest in, whether it's a bill, a policy, an appointment or a favor. Part of the problem is, despite her ample comic skills, Louis-Dreyfus simply doesn't project a charismatic presence, nor does she possess an undeniable appeal that holds your interest even when you think her character is doing dumb, pathetic or unpleasant things. It wasn't smarter than Veep, but its characters were allowed to win sometimes. Francis Underwood snuck all manner of crimes past a compliant media, and we loved him for it.

There's a smattering of interns and speech writers as well, though I'd almost venture to say the cast is too large and unfocused for a first episode. The first season of Veep is only eight episodes long, but that proves to be enough to make me wish that there were more. It's a really sharp comedy, and definitely a more scathing satire than I'd expected it to be.
