Boise, Idaho – For years, Ford has reigned supreme in diesel truck sales while the GMC/Chevy Duramax engine that powers the Silverado is holding it steady in second place. According to the latest figures reported in Automotive News, though, the Dodge Ram is catching up quickly. A huge leap in sales over the past three quarters have led to major gains for Dodge and Ford while GMC and Chevrolet diesel truck sales have stayed steady. Dodge still has some way to go to surpass Silverado sales, but the company is closing the gap quickly. What's causing the momentum swing toward Dodge diesel trucks? For many Ram drivers, reliability is key. Gem State Diesel Master Technician and diesel engine repair specialist for Gem State Diesel (located outside Boise, Idaho in Meridian), Shawn Musgrave, has worked extensively with the common-rail injection systems used in the Ram's Dodge Cummins engines. "Hard-working trucks need regular diesel engine maintenance no matter what brand you buy, but truck owners talk. Happy Ram owners are more than willing to talk about how their trucks have performed."
Another possible reason for Dodge's rapid ascent is the company's willingness to offer features buyers want. "The truck market isn't just for hauling heavy loads," says Musgrave, "so successful models offer something beyond raw power. Better fuel efficiency to appeal to budget-conscious buyers, MegaCab expansions that leave more room for passengers and air suspension that helps a truck ride more like a car are selling points to buyers who fall outside the traditional diesel truck market."
Musgrave points out that all truck owners need a reliable diesel engine repair center on call. "Diesel maintenance schedules are tight, and you can't afford to let oil and filter changes slide. Your service center and maintenance schedule have more to do with reliability than whether you're part of the Dodge revolution, stand by your Ford with its Powerstroke engine or find what you're looking for from GMC/Chevy Duramax diesel."
