California Statewide Day Of Action, Rallies in Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles
Medical Cannabis Supporters Decry Federal Attacks On Patient Collectives, Call Upon Attorney General Kamala Harris To Take Action

BriefingWire.com, 5/05/2013 - CALIFORIA – On Monday, May 6, 2013, medical cannabis patients and activists are calling upon supporters across the State to contact California Attorney General Kamala Harris urging her to demand that federal authorities stand down in their ongoing effort to thwart California’s medical marijuana laws, and attend rallies across the State. (Full details below.)

“It’s time for President Obama to rein in U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag who is misusing federal laws intended for crack peddlers near schools, not City permitted and licensed medical cannabis collectives,” states Shona Gochenaur, director of Axis of Love SF Community Center. “Our community’s collectives bring safety to San Francisco,” Gochenaur continues. (See SF Taskforce Report - http://www.sfgov2.org/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=1266)

Kathleen Cappetti, operator of a San Francisco City permitted collective, The Hemp Center, since 2003, received notice from U.S. Attorneys to close or face federal prosecution. The Hemp Center has provided compassionate care to many low-income patients and employed 15 workers with benefits. “Our closure affects public welfare; cannabis saves lives,” states Cappetti.

Advocates have also planned rallies at 12 p.m. on Monday, May 6th at federal buildings in Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles taking their message to the street. Lanette Davies, director of Crusaders for Patients Rights and coordinator of the Sacramento rally, states, “Patients, activists and citizens stand united in our concerns about federal interference in our Constitutional right to govern our State’s medical cannabis laws.”

Coordinator of the Los Angeles rally and director of Patient Advocacy Network, Degé Coutee states, “Over half the country supports full legalization yet legitimate patients and caregivers, elected officials, property owners and banks still face federal criminal jeopardy in California over medical cannabis. This has to end - now.”
