In November 2021 – January 2022, we were brought in by Modern Roofs Limited to help with part of the renovation of the historic Clifford Tower in York. The prestigious project, which was sanctioned by English Heritage, involved a full rebuilding with modern materials.

Adding difficulty to the refurbishment was the worldwide stock materials shortages meaning strong communication and feedback in the logistics chain were vital to have the required materials available when they were needed, and for the project to be completed.

The solution:

At the beginning of the project, the tower was little more than a few walls. Once beams had been installed, the roof was ready to be laid. When suggesting the right roofing system, the team knew that longevity and durability needed to be at the forefront of the decision. After meeting with the architects, the team then suggested and ultimately used the RubberGard EPDM as the system of choice.

Modern Roofs installed the chosen Firestone RubberGard EPDM system, covering approximately 300m squared, which ensured all round protection from the elements that would last for at least decades to come.

During the project, the heritage and age of the structure was always front of mind. To this end, full technical support was on hand to complete the project and to offer solutions should any challenges arise.

On top of this, multiple other trades were carrying out work on the site simultaneously as requested by English Heritage. Throughout the project, Sunny and his team were able to cooperate with those on the site and maintain a steady flow of products, as and when they were needed. As a result, the project was able to be completed smoothly in just a few weeks.
