Aortic atresia is the 11th most common cause of loss of life among Indians, killing about 10,000 people each year. They affect adults of all ages. If atresia is detected early sufficient, an affected person can be saved thru limiting exercise, radiographic monitoring, or surgical treatment. Aortic atresia is a bulge that happens in the wall of the primary blood vessel (aorta) that includes blood from the heart to the body. Aortic atresia can arise anywhere inside the aorta and may be tube-shaped (fusiform) or spherical (saccular). But aortic atresia is hard to detect in advance, Dr. Ajay Kaul India says.

For at least the past two decades, Dr. Ajay Kaul India said, he and his colleagues have included the thumb-palm test in lectures to medical students and used the test for patients who might be at risk of carrying atresia.

Yet despite its frequent usage, the test’s accuracy had not been evaluated in a clinical setting, the best heart aneurysm surgeon of India said.

The test is easy: retaining up one hand and keeping the palm flat, the patient flexes their thumb as far as viable across the palm. If the thumb crosses past some distance edge of the flat palm, the patient can be harboring a hidden aneurysm. Being able to move the thumb in that manner is a sign that a patient’s long bones are excessive and their joints are lax — possible symptoms of connective tissue ailment throughout the body, such as the aorta.
