Erskine-Smith first Qualified Contestant

for Beaches-East York Federal Liberal Nomination

TORONTO-- Nathaniel Erskine-Smith is on the road to Ottawa as the next Liberal Member of Parliament for Beaches-East York in Toronto. Late last week, he received official notification from National Campaign Co-Chairs Katie Telford and Dan Gagnier that he has met all the criteria of section 1.8 of the National Campaign Rules. He is the first Qualified Nomination Contestant for Beaches-East York.

"I'm delighted to be the first candidate in our riding to complete the Liberal Party's green-lighting process," said Nate, an Oxford-educated litigation lawyer who was born and raised in the riding. "This is the first step toward my goal of joining a Liberal Government led by Justin Trudeau that will get Canada back on track."

Nomination candidates must complete a rigorous vetting process that includes a comprehensive biography, signed endorsements from a minimum of 100 local Liberal Party members, passing background and credit history checks, a 45-minute telephone interview, and a clear statement of goals as a candidate.

Qualified Nomination Contestants receive enhanced access to the Liberal Party database and membership forms. As in all ridings, the date for the nomination meeting for Beaches-East York will be set by the Provincial Campaign Co-Chairs.

"The work is just starting," said Nate. "But it is an accomplishment along the way, and it’s a good reason to say thank you to every volunteer who has made calls and knocked on doors for me, to everyone who signed my nomination papers, and to everyone who has joined the party to support me."

Meet Nathaniel Erskine-Smith

Nate is a litigation lawyer, born and raised in Beaches-East York.

At Queen’s University in Kingston, he completed degrees in politics and law, served on the board of a local newspaper, and won public speaking competitions, on topics from youth engagement to criminal justice. He also met his wife Amy, and owned several small businesses, including a campus delivery service and a food truck. In his final year studying politics, he ran for Kingston city council, and was endorsed by the Kingston Whig-Standard and the Queen’s Journal.

He graduated from Queen’s law in the top 10% of his class, and was a member of the Queen’s Business Law Clinic, advising local small businesses and not-for-profit associations. During and after law school, he worked at a large Bay Street law firm, providing advice on a wide range of issues, including government privacy matters, and multimillion dollar franchise litigation.

In 2011, Nate and his wife Amy moved to Oxford in the United Kingdom, where each completed their masters degrees. Nate graduated with a master of laws (B.C.L.) with distinction at the University of Oxford. He studied legal and political philosophy and constitutional law, with a focus on Canadian constitutional law. During the year abroad, he also played baseball for both the University and the City of Oxford.

After Oxford, he volunteered for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA). He has and continues to perform pro bono legal work for a range of clients and causes, including a local theatre company, and a parent who was denied his rights under the Education Act.
