Fort Bend’s March Toward 1 Million Residents Puts County Clerk’s Role In Spotlight
County clerk candidate Tamara McFarlane urges voters to examine the office responsible for protecting property, court, business and vital records

BriefingWire.com, 10/05/2026 - (Fort Bend County, Texas) — As Fort Bend County approaches 1 million residents, county clerk candidate Tamara McFarlane is encouraging voters to research an office whose responsibilities touch many of life’s most consequential moments.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Fort Bend County’s population reached 975,191 in 2025, an 18.3% increase from 2020. The county has more than 341,000 housing units, a 77% homeownership rate and more than 129,000 employer and non-employer business establishments.

That growth generates increasing demand for the records and services administered by the Fort Bend County Clerk’s Office.

The county clerk serves as clerk and records custodian for Commissioners Court, the constitutional county court and statutory county courts. The office also records and safeguards deeds, property records, plats, birth and death certificates, assumed-name certificates and other public documents. It issues marriage licenses and maintains records affecting probate, foreclosures, businesses and property ownership. It also serves as the Vice Chair of the County’s Election Commission.

“People may not think about the county clerk until they purchase property, open a business, need a birth certificate, settle an estate or access a court record,” McFarlane said. “These records represent people’s homes, families, livelihoods and legal rights. They must be protected, accurate and accessible.”

McFarlane’s professional background includes 25 years leading land acquisitions and divestitures for Fortune 100 corporations. She has also worked as an award-winning government auditor, operated a small business in the real estate industry and served as a Fort Bend County election judge.

McFarlane said the county’s continued growth requires disciplined financial management, secure recordkeeping, capable employees, resilient technology and customer-service standards that can be measured.

“A rapidly growing county cannot rely on systems that merely keep doing what they have always done,” McFarlane said. “Residents should expect responsible spending, protection against record and property fraud, understandable processes and service that respects their time.”

McFarlane is asking voters to learn what the county clerk does, compare the candidates’ professional qualifications and consider who is prepared to manage a multimillion-dollar public operation serving one of Texas’ largest and most diverse counties.
