How to Fix a Cracked Wall
Some cracks in the house will require a professional to fix it. Some hairline cracks can be repaired on your own. Here we show you some tips on cracked wall repair.

BriefingWire.com, 2/09/2020 - [FURL=http://crackedwalls.com.au/]Cracked wall repair[/FURL] requires a few simple tools to get you started, but is something most people can do on their own. Even a well built house will eventually develop a crack or two over time, due to the natural settling of the house, so knowing how to do this is a useful part of home maintenance.

How to fix drywall

A crack in your drywall is one of the easiest cracks to fix. You will need a utility knife, a vacuum, mesh joint tape, a putty knife, some sandpaper, and joint compound. Use the utility knife to cut a V shaped notch the entire length of the crack. The V notch will allow you access to loose debris inside the crack, which your next step will be to vacuum out.

Once the crack is clean, use the joint compound to adhere the mesh joint tape over the crack. Let it dry, and then sand off any excess. All that's left is to touch up the paint so that it isn't obvious where the crack once was.

How to fix plaster walls

For a plaster wall, the approach is much the same as for drywall. You will want to V notch the crack and vacuum out the debris exactly as you would for the drywall crack. The repair compound is a little different this time however. Instead of joint compound and mesh, you'll be using patching plaster.

Patching plaster is the same stuff used to finish plaster walls. It's sold in powder form, and activated by adding water. Patching plaster dries quickly and is easy to sand, making it ideal for patching.

To fill in the crack, mix a small amount of patching plaster and spray the area to be filled with water so it doesn't dry before you're ready. Use a drywall knife to fill the crack, and then sand after it has dried. You may need to add another layer of patching plaster after the first one to get the right look, and this is okay to do. You can plaster and sand as many times as you need to in order to get an even appearance.

How to fix concrete walls

Perhaps the trickiest type of cracked wall repair is for concrete walls. You'll need a concrete injection kit for this. Since you can't V out the crack in order to clean it, you'll have to do your best with your vacuum and perhaps a wire brush to get it as clean as possible. Once that is done, follow the instructions on your concrete injection kit.

Small hairline cracks can easily be repaired at home, but large cracks should be evaluated by a professional. If the crack is very large, or has caused the walls to become uneven, it's possible there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. For your safety, have these suspicious looking cracks checked before attempting any kind of repair.
