HOUSTON, TEXAS – The only American to receive the Mother Teresa Award for his orphan rescue facilities built in the war-torn Southern Sudan, Pastor Sam Childers (“Machine Gun Preacher”- www.MachineGunPreacher.org) is making his third Texas Tour to rally support for his charity, the Angels of East Africa, and to help community leaders to make a difference in their own zip code and calling to serve anywhere in the world.
His story caught the attention of Hollywood and a motion picture was made about his life and was released in 2011 entitled Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler. The Machine Gun Preacher name was given him by the locals in Sudan, because of his courage, faith, and leadership that led him to build an orphanage for the children of Africa in a war-zone; where his charity feeds, clothes, educates and teaches the youth a trade or helps them to develop business opportunities in a ultra-high-risk region.
Pastor Sam will make visits with his crew of three, which includes his MGP touring trailer that houses his custom “choppers” (including one made by iconic Jesse James), feature books and DVDs of the movie, jewelry from Africa, and Machine Gun Preacher gear.
“I love coming through Texas every year and seeing the good people of Texas, whether its visiting a Harley-Davidson retail outlet, a church or martial arts facility, or attending a meet and greet,” says Sam (as some of his close friends call him). “On this trip, we are planning for a longer tour and I understand that I may have an opportunity to go into the prison system, do some radio interviews, be the guest of honor at a dinner fund raiser for the youth, and a couple of lunch meet-ups with community thought-leaders who are working to rescue the needy here in the U.S. from drug addiction, human trafficking, and homelessness.”
In 1998, Sam arrived in the village of Yei, Southern Sudan. The African nation was in the midst of the Second Sudanese War, and Sam, urged by his Pastor in America, had joined a mission group to help repair huts damaged in the conflict. During this assignment, Sam stumbled across the body of a child torn apart by a landmine. He fell to his knees and made a pledge to God to do whatever it took to help the people of Southern Sudan.
