Is My Tree Diseased? Common Types of Tree Disease and How to Spot Them
Trees are vital to our ecosystems, providing homes for millions of varieties of lifeform and increasing biodiversity. Therefore, it is important that we do our best to ensure the health and longevity of our trees. Organisations like the Woodland Trust and Forestry Commission do excellent work educating people and researching ways to protect our trees from the spread of disease.
In the UK, there are various diseases that have been identified as posing a threat to our trees. Below, Cheltenham Tree Services list some of the more common tree diseases and how to spot them on your trees.
Ash Dieback (Chalara)
Ash dieback is an extremely serious tree disease that has seen an increase over the last few years in the UK. Caused by fungus, infection can spread through the dispersal of spores on the wind. The fungus causes blockages to the infected tree’s vital water transport system, resulting in leaf loss, dark lesions appearing in the bark and the eventual dieback of the crown. Young trees are especially vulnerable to this disease.
