BAHRS-DIE & STAMPING IS GREENER THAN EVER

August 11, 2015

“IT AIN’T EASY BEING GREEN”

Kermit the Frog said it years ago. And it’s true; standing out in business is difficult when you “blend in with so many other ordinary things.” Kermit's greatest problem was his green exterior. In businesses, it’s finding ways to actually be ‘Green’ that are both cost-effective, yield positive impact on the environment, and are honest in use of the ‘Green’ moniker.

Lighting makes a big impact on how we feel and has a big impact on the environment. Contributing to a sustainable and green environment, Bahrs retrofitted the lighting in their plant and offices. Retrofitting old eight foot, double T-12 bulb fixtures to accommodate 4-bulb, T-8’s with new reflectors and ballasts. This cut total wattage in half, yet realized dramatically improved light levels. Consuming less electricity, has reduced our electrical load, reducing the demand and associated emissions from "off-site" power generation. These lighting upgrades were undertaken to keep up with community and customer environmental expectations.

Brightly illuminated facilities contribute to improved productivity, fewer errors in the warehouse and a safer workplace for our employees around tow motors and manufacturing equipment. Our high bays operate hundreds of degrees cooler, save on A/C bills and provide employees a cooler working environment.

The Energy Savings Cost Council says energy-efficient lighting upgrades give the highest ROI (an average 45 percent) of any single-technology project, can pay for themselves in as little as 2.2 years, continuing over the lifetime of the system through reduced energy and maintenance costs.

In this business, ‘it ain’t easy being green’. Despite the challenges, over the years we started green initiatives even before they became the ‘correct’ thing to do— maintaining a clean workplace, reducing waste, recycling of materials, improved use of electronic data, less hardware, and lower power consumption.

•Constantly evaluate the impact of our activities on the environment.

•Continually work to improve our environment impact by setting specific environment-related objectives, and work toward implementing them at the earliest opportunity.

•Look to our suppliers to follow environmental standards set by our customers’ expectations and government requirements, and will encourage suppliers to cultivate their own environmentally responsible agendas.

Additional examples of ‘GREEN’ processes:

Abrasive waterjet cutting: Environmentally friendly (green) process. Waterjet requires no cooling or lubricating oils, no chemically contaminated chips, generates no noxious fumes. The cutting "tools," water and garnet abrasive, are environmentally benign. The abrasive waste is inert garnet with a small fraction of particles from the material being cut. Waste abrasive is disposed of safely at a dry landfill with no processing and no environmental risk. Waterjet's narrow cut width allows nesting of parts to maximize material utilization. Minimal scrap free of chemical contamination, can be recycled resulting in raw material, energy, and cost savings.
