Once the first freeze hits the Almaguin Highlands, the home's exterior takes the hardest hit. Snow is being pushed into every crack by the wind, ice forms on all of the edges, and the temperature can go from relatively warm to freezing within a day. For years, Kidd's Home Hardware, a family-owned hardware store serving Sundridge and the surrounding area, has prepared people for these conditions. This season, the store is spotlighting siding, the layer between a home and everything a Northern Ontario winter throws at it.People usually only worry about their siding when there is a problem. A loose siding panel starts knocking against itself in the wind. Water seeps through a crack and behind the siding; before you know it, you have rotted wood, peeled paint, or a mouldy smell that won’t go away. What could have cost you a few hundred dollars in repairs during the fall could end up costing you thousands after moisture and mould have made themselves at home. At Kidd’s Home Hardware, we offer a wide variety of Northern Ontario siding products, designed to withstand freeze-thaw weather, snow loads, and extreme cold. There are vinyl, metal, and engineered wood siding products, as well as soffit and fascia products to finish off your siding installation. We work with homeowners to compare products based on cold resistance and durability.
“A lot of people come in worried because they’ve spotted a crack or a gap and they’re not sure how bad it is. Up here, a small problem on a house's exterior can get serious fast once winter sets in. We like to sit down with folks, look at what they’re dealing with and help them pick siding that will stand up to our weather without a lot of fuss down the road,” said a spokesperson for Kidd’s Home Hardware.
Kidd's Home Hardware has been in the area for decades, and most of its customers are neighbourhood residents who have shopped there for years. In addition to exterior materials, Kidd's Home Hardware sells plumbing and electrical materials, paint, tools, appliances, and other items needed for the area's homes and cottages. Customers often come in with a photo on their phones or a faulty item, and the salespeople make sure they understand the problem. That patient, practical help is a big part of why so many local families trust the store with their home projects.
