Kidd's Home Hardware keeps eight acres of lumber yards at its store in Sundridge, a village beside Highway 11 in the Almaguin Highlands. The store opened at this site in 1990 with 2,400 square feet of floor space, and its retail area now covers 19,000 square feet. It sells to contractors on job sites and to homeowners doing their own renovations. The yard carries the Northern Ontario lumber and building materials that most house and cottage projects call for. Customers will find lumber, drywall, siding and moulding, trim, and roofing materials. Stock comes through Canadian distributors, including Doman, Goodfellow, Gillfor, and Taiga. Through these suppliers, the store can bring in pressure-treated wood, engineered wood, composite decking and railings. The store also sells house wrap, sheathing tape, spray foam, and insulation alongside lumber. Trim and other materials can be bought in the exact amount a job calls for. That matters on a cottage project, where coming up one sheet of drywall short can mean a long drive back to the store.
"Having the lumber and the plumbing parts in one place makes a big difference for people who live and work up here," said a spokesperson for Kidd's Home Hardware. "A contractor can pick up framing material and a new sump pump in the same visit. Homeowners get the same attention, and our team is glad to sit down with them and work out a materials list before they start. We like seeing a project go smoothly from the first order."
The plumbing department covers water supply for rural properties. For homes and cottages on private wells, it carries jet pumps, submersible well pumps, pressure tanks and well accessories from Burcam and Red Lion. The department also carries sump pumps for basements and crawl spaces from the same two makers. The department also stocks valves and fittings, along with fixtures such as Moen faucets and Maax tubs and shower bases. Anyone planning a new home or cottage can order a Beaver Homes and Cottages material package through the store.
