BriefingWire.com, 7/21/2022 - The brief

In 2021, we were contacted by Chris Wade, the architectural technical officer at the University of Leeds, regarding a specification project. The roof of the helium recovery suite at the Woodhouse site required our attention.

The 250m2 roof area was coated in its original asphalt and required something more durable and waterproof to ensure the longevity of the building. A major hurdle of the project was the high number of plant units and other obstructions, along with the level of detail within the roof space that meant a durable and versatile solution would be needed, which would withstand the elements and be long-lasting.

The solution

As always, our first port of call was carrying out a site survey and creating a roof condition report to ensure we could find the correct solution for the needs of the building and from there, determine a PermaRoof Registered Installer (PRI) to undertake the works. Having recently launched our new PermaRoof500 (P500) it was the perfect opportunity to utilise its revolutionary features.

Once the roof report was complete, it left us all in agreement that the only way to move forward was to use the P500 liquid overlay system. The innovative P500 system is a continuous waterproofing membrane that also serves as anti-skid and anti-slip surfacing. Liquid roofing was the best solution in this case, because of its ability to adapt to a more complex area. Its rapid curing means it is resistant to rain within 30 minutes of application. And even with just one layer applied, it has a high resistance to extreme temperatures from as low as –40c up to 80c.

The project was started and completed within June 2022, with plenty of time to spare before the start of the next academic year. Using the P500 system meant giving the University team full confidence that the roof was now secure.

The testimonial

Samuel Moore, managing director at Samuel Moore Roofing was brought on board to work on the project following a successful collaboration with PermaRoof previously at the new Hull ICU unit at Hull Hospital.

Samuel said: “Following a full roof conditional report and meeting with Sunny and the building developer, Tilbury Douglas, we opted for the P500 liquid system as the best solution for this project. Our installers undertook rigorous training to become registered and be able to confidently use the system.

“We were fully supported by PermaRoof from the outset with Sunny arranging the site surveys and meetings and keeping us updated every step of the way. Other members of the PermaRoof team ensured delivery was taken care of and that the project ran smoothly. We absolutely loved installing the P500 system - it was so easy to use, and we are already pricing other projects to continue using it.”

Sunny said: “The P500 system was able to successfully tackle the major challenge of the roof area, which had a high number of plant units and other obstructions. Even though most of these obstacles were removed prior to installation, the high level of detail meant the P500 system was the best choice for the job because of its adaptability to be installed in a single layer with excellent adhesion to all types of surfaces.

“It was fantastic to see the system in use for the first time since it launched, and I am pleased it provided the solution for our client – as a result the project was completed quickly and easily. All roofs should be able to stand the test of weather and time, and for our education facilities, this is even more important.”
