The Herbal Remedies that Can Cure Your Migraines
If you suffer from migraines, you already know how debilitating they can be. And it’s not just the physical pain that can take a toll! That’s when herbal remedies can step in and take charge.

BriefingWire.com, 12/10/2018 - Medically-prescribed treatments for migraines include antidepressants, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers. For many people these either don’t work at all or the side effects are so bad that the medications themselves are disabling.

It’s no wonder then that many migraine sufferers look to herbal remedies or possible vitamin or mineral supplements in desperation. Some claim some relief with these although there is little evidence to support their efficacy. Consumer Reports does its own surveys of these treatments, and this article reports on some of their assessments of their usefulness.

Butterbur. This is a remedy that has been used for as long as there has been written history. The “medicine” is an extract made from the root. In 2004, a study found that 75mg twice daily worked better than a placebo. There was also a suggestion that it could be at least as effective as prescription drugs in lessening the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraines. Some people have adverse reaction such as burping, stomach problems, fatigue, and itching. Some products have chemicals in them that can harm the liver. You’d be advised to use ones labeled “hepatotoxis PA-free,” understanding that this is merely a claim. No one is checking the contents.

Coenzyme Q10. Our body makes this substance. One study indicated that taking 150 mg a day cut down on how long the migraines lasted. Similar results were found with 100mg three times a day in another study.

Feverfew. This, too, is an ancient medicine for headaches. Some studies indicate that extracts do reduce how often the patient had migraines and eased the migraine symptoms such as nausea and pain.

Magnesium. Migraine patients have been shown to have low levels of this in their brain. However, treating with supplements has mixed results. There are at times some unpleasant side effects.

Riboflavin. Taken over a period of three months, some patients showed improvement. However, side effects include diarrhea and frequent urination. Foods that are high in riboflavin include cheese, leafy green vegetables, meat, milk, yogurt, enriched grains.

A word of caution: there’s often little regulation of these and what’s on the label may not be what’s in the bottle. Product labeled “USP Verified” are more reliable, so keep that in mind when purchasing the above supplements.
