Yesterday, almost all of that support simply vanished. Many stayed home. Some switched to protest candidates. And a portion of those who did vote backed Count Binface.

The result? A striking demonstration of how indifference among non-Reform voters can create the conditions for a dominant outcome — not because support surged, but because participation collapsed.

If even a fraction of the 2024 Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem or Green voters had turned out yesterday — combined with some of the protest votes — the result could have looked very different.

Some groups vote with high determination and commitment. Others vote only when the election feels “big enough”, “close enough”, or “worth the trip”. Yesterday showed what happens when one side turns out and the other side doesn’t.

As the next General Election approaches, Clacton’s numbers offer a reminder: outcomes aren’t shaped only by preference — they’re shaped by who actually shows up.

Selective voting isn’t new. But yesterday’s by-election showed it in its clearest form yet - and it failed that test massively.
