The Unique Group (www.theuniquegroup.com/), a company offering one-stop brand packaging solutions, is weighing in on the many uniform changes in the National Basketball Association (NBA) this season.Perhaps more than any of the other professional leagues, the teams from the NBA routinely change their uniforms. These changes don’t only occur just before the season begins: the NBA is known for having specialty uniforms throughout the season to reflect team milestones or recognition of broader league events.
“The NBA has a very active jersey culture,” says Asher Lichtman, vice president of sales and marketing at The Unique Group. “Year in and year out, we see teams transforming themselves, innovating new home and away uniforms, and even adding game-specific uniforms throughout the season. It really is fun to watch.”
Some of the changes that have already been seen during the current NBA season include the New York Knicks’ new 1950s throwback uniforms and the Raptors’ black alternate jerseys and commemorative All-Star patch, since they are hosting this season’s All-Star game. The Philadelphia 76ers also made noticeable changes to their jerseys, and the Milwaukee Bucks had a uniform overhaul.
“The Bucks look to be the most transformative,” Lichtman says. “Their situation is rare in that it wasn’t the NBA or Nike that did the redesign Instead, a private design agency actually gave Milwaukee its new look. They also have a dark alternate uniform that’s new to the team’s arsenal.”
The Bucks, and a few other teams, took things a step further by redesigning their courts. The 76ers and Raptors are just two of the other teams who had a court change, along with the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks. More unveilings are expected to occur as the season continues.
“It’s a branding thing,” Lichtman continues. “We speak a lot about branding here at The Unique Group and the importance of keeping it consistent all around. For teams who went through major uniform changes, it’s important to keep that brand consistent throughout.”
