The what and how of rcd testing that you must know before you go for the right professionals
The right professionals are a must for the work of RCD testing but to know that you are hiring the right professionals for the work you also need to know the details of the work for sure.

BriefingWire.com, 10/09/2021 - Mooloolaba :RCDs or Residual Current Devices are designed to shut down power supply in case a circuit is affected by surging electricity or current overload and is an important safety installation in all types of properties. In order to ensure that they are perfectly working RCDs are required to be regularly tested as per a regulation that clearly states that one must verify the effectiveness of the device by a procedure that simulates the actual fault condition independent of any test button incorporated into it. There is also certain regulation on the amount of trip current and trip time that must be maintained.

How are they tested?

Normally there are three different types of rcd testing methods, like

• Operating time test: This is required to be performed by a qualified electrician to measure the actual time an RCD requires to trip and whether it is quick enough to be considered effective or within the acceptable limit.

• The push-button test: This test ensures that if there is any earth leakage, the device will trip, breaking the circuit and protecting people and appliances from harm. Each time the button, that comes incorporated in the device is pushed, the RCD detects and imbalance and switch jumps to off to cut power supply. This test should be conducted on a regular basis but one must also keep in mind that this is not much accurate and cannot be fully trusted for assurance that the device is perfectly working.

• Trip time test: In this type of testing the trip time of the device is calculated using external equipment. As this test requires measuring the tripping time of the RCD in case of an overload and also the amount of current that initiates a tripping, this can only be performed by a professional trained in testing or a qualified electrician.

Importance of keeping the records

According to the OHS regulation, the owner or the controller of the property is required to maintain a record of rcd testing except for the regular push button tests. As per the regulation the following information must be included in the regular report of test and maintenance of residual current devices.

• Name of the professional electrician responsible for carrying out the tests

• The dates over which the tests were performed

• The result or outcome o every single test performed

• Date on which the next test is scheduled.

You must also keep in mind that the records should be put in a place that can conveniently reached by everyone concerned. With regular testing of these devices and maintaining the report as required you are not only in compliance with the safety standard regulations but your enterprise is also least likely to face any unwanted accidents or incidents. RCD testing is not at all expensive and as they can help in detecting faults early and repairing them before any major mishap has taken place and this can certainly save you a considerable amount of money in terms of possible damages or insurance payouts.
