Upward African Woman (UAW), an organization supporting women and children will host its Black Tie Gala on Sunday, October 16 in Beverly Hills, California. Honored guests including Ambassador Emeritus Diane Watson; the Honorable Jan Perry; Award-winning vocalist Chante Moore; Actress. Oghenekaro Itene; Actress, Omono Okojie; Actress, McKenzie Westmore; Actors and Activists, the Talabi Twins, Qadree El-Amin, founder Southpaw Entertainment; Artist, "Aaron Fresh" Hinton; Parrice Smith (Az Yet); along with special guests from film, fashion, television, and entertainment. Philanthropist and businesswoman, Monalisa Okojie brought together eight professional women in healthcare, education, law, entertainment, media, and technology to support women and children in underserved environments. The women use their expertise to assist in bringing about change that positively impacts the lives of those they serve. To date, UAW has supported women and children in both Los Angeles, Nigeria and Ghana and Kenya.
The members of Upward African Woman are working tirelessly, using their voices and business connections to develop programs that will keep women off the street and in the classroom. “We have a responsibility to reach those who need to be given a chance to thrive.” Comments founder and director of the program, Monalisa Okojie.
UAW is a non-profit 501c3 California based organization founded in 2014, helping women and children who live in substandard conditions, are underserved and underrepresented. Our goal is to empower women and support their children through sustainable programs. These recipients are primarily the victims of cultural, mental, and physical abuse, and neglect.
UAW’s four major programs:
1. The UAW Sponsorship Program
Provides financial assistance to Women and Children from severely disadvantaged communities.
Offers mentorship to women and children enabling them to study and acquire the necessary skills, accreditation and opportunities to improve their life outcomes.
2. The UAW Community Development Program
Focuses on funding projects that bring housing, community facilities, potable water and other services, including technical assistance and financing for small businesses and agricultural cooperatives.
3. UAW Community Outreach Program
Provides support both locally (Los Angeles, and in Africa) offering food, clothing and basic needs to the underserved and the unhoused.
4. Leadership Program
UAW is committed to providing youth with the tools and skills to thrive academically and socially which will have a positive impact on their future.
