Our Wood Flooring FAQ’s will give you all the information you need if you are thinking about changing your flooring and will help you decide which is the best option for you.

What is Wooden Flooring?

Wood flooring is a hardwood flooring product which is manufactured from timber. It is a common flooring choice for many homes and businesses and there is a wide choice available depending on your needs and budget. It comes in various types, styles, colours and finishes.

There are four main types of hardwood flooring; Solid, Engineered, Laminate & Parquet.

What type of wooden floor is best?

It really depends on the usage and traffic the floor will be subject to as to which type of is best for you and your budget. All types of wooden floors are hardwearing and there are benefits and disadvantages to each one. Always use a reputable flooring company when you are choosing as they will help you decide which is the wooden flooring for you.

What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring has a plywood base which is heat pressed and dried for two days. It then has a hardwood oak or timber product layer added which thicknesses ranging from 2.5mm to 8mm. The thicker the top layer, the higher the quality and the more hardwearing it will be. Dependent on the thickness and quality of the hardwood top layer they can be sanded once per every 1mm thickness throughout its life. The general rule is that you should always have a minimum of 1mm of thickness remaining to ensure your floor can withstand use and wear and tear.

Engineered wood flooring can be used with underfloor heating and fitted as a floating floor which means the boards can be removed and replaced easily. It normally has a click-lock system for fitting which makes it better than other wooden flooring types with no need for glue.

What is solid wood flooring?

Solid wood flooring is a high-quality hardwood floor which is solid wood throughout, it provides a permanently fixed floor which will last a lifetime and can be sanded and refinished as needed.

###

Oak, maple and cherry are the most durable types of hardwood solid flooring and are a good choice for busy households or businesses where there is a lot of footfall traffic. They are hardwearing, long-lasting and the boards can be sanded down and retreated up to 7 times on a 22mm board. They come with grooves in the back of the board to prevent it from cupping.

What is the difference between solid wood flooring compared to engineered?

A solid hardwood floor is a solid piece of wood with no other layers, compared to an engineered wood floor which is constructed of layers of plywood at the bottom and a hardwood layer on the top. Engineered hardwood construction is durable and has high-performance qualities with lots of types of hardwood and finishes available.
