82-Year-Old Black Woman in District Heights, MD Ripped Off by Electric Company PEPCO
"It is disheartening to witness my mother, a pillar of this community, being taken advantage of in such a blatant manner," said Rev. Leland Core. "We have exhausted all avenues for resolution."

BriefingWire.com, 6/01/2023 - Apple Core Child Care, founded in 1991 that has been providing quality early childhood instructions and care, remains in brawl with PEPCO despite the lack of use of the commercial building since Covid-19 that limited its occupation capacity.

Rev. Leland Core and his 82-year-old mother, Mrs. Rebecca Core-Ebron, are raising their voices against the unjust practices of the electric company in District Heights, MD. Mrs. Core, a long-time resident of the community, has been subjected to exorbitant charges on her electric bill despite her property being only partially occupied. Her son, Rev. Core has tirelessly advocated for her rights, engaging in multiple conversations with the district's senator, yet no resolution has been achieved. Rev. Core initiated several meetings with PEPCO via emails but received nothing more than a meaningless papertrail requesting more documentation.

Mrs. Core, a beloved member of the community, finds herself trapped in a distressing situation. Despite being a responsible citizen and conscientiously managing her energy consumption, she continues to receive inflated electric bills from the utility company. Her property, which is only partially occupied, is being overcharged, burdening her with financial strain at the age of 82. Who at PEPCO is the counterbalance to ensure vulnerable seniors are not cheated out of their limited resources? No one is the sentiments expressed by her son.

Rev. Leland Core, a respected figure in the community and a prominent religious leader has taken up the cause to seek justice for his mother. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, he has engaged in numerous conversations with the district's senator, raising concerns about the unjust billing practices of the electric company. Regrettably, despite the Reverend's persistent efforts, no concrete action has been taken to rectify the situation.

"It is disheartening to witness my mother, a pillar of this community, being taken advantage of in such a blatant manner," said Rev. Leland Core. "We have exhausted all avenues for resolution, including multiple conversations with state and city officials seemingly begging them to open an inquiry and audit energy usages in the 20747 zip code in comparison to other areas, but to no avail. It is high time that the electric company be held accountable for its unfair practices. This is just the beginning”.

The Core family's struggle highlights a larger issue of systemic injustice that affects vulnerable members of our society. It is imperative that the voices of marginalized individuals, such as Mrs.Core-Ebron, are heard and that action is taken to rectify this egregious situation.

Rev. Core and Mrs. Core-Ebron are calling on the community, civic leaders, and advocacy groups to rally behind them in their fight for justice. They are determined to shed light on the unfair practices of the electric company and seek a resolution that will alleviate the financial burden placed upon Mrs. Core and others who are forced to pay ridiculous utility bills or lose service. The advocacy group, BacPac, (Black American Constitutional Political Action Committee) is taking up the cause to seek a hearing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) led by Chair Cathy McMorris to request an immediate audit of energy billables in selected zip codes near District Heights black communities.
