Since the Constitutional Tribunal of Dominican Republic circulated its decision that removed retroactively the Citizenship of certain Dominican nationals, the country is living in an atmosphere of intense drama and in a state of panic not seen since the time of the Caudillo Leonidas Rafael Trujillo who ordered the killing of over 30.000 Haitians during his ethnic cleansing operation in 1937. Already people on both sides of the Island are already screaming no to the planned genocide.Today the Inter-American Commission has expressed grave concerns as to the recent court action that renders stateless over 200,000 Dominicans with Haitian ancestry. The Court ordered the Government to conduct an audit of its archives to determine how many people have claimed inappropriately the Dominican Citizenship.
In a meeting with the Dominican General Consul yesterday, the head of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition (HAGC) expressed grave concerns regarding the Constitutional Tribunal decision to push the Country into a deep crisis that may have severe consequences on commerce, trade and tourism. As a pariah nation/state, Dominicans Authorities should seek to rescindt the court action immediately in order to avoid serious financial outcomes. The President of the Electoral Board flexed his muscles on Monday by stating that Dominican Republic was a sovereign nation and is free to do whatever that they do want.
Lafortune continues that it appears that the ultraconservative elements in the Government have now the upper hand and want to place President Medina before a fait accompli situation and pushing him into the abyss. There is already so much suffering in that country. Pushing the society to the brink, only benefits those who want instability and war in the region. By approving this measure, the court has violated 13 articles in the Dominican Constitution. We have had enough rethorics from the Dominican Government. Mr. Medina must present acceptable and legitmate options on the table to in order to remove his country from the deepness of the abyss, said Lafortune who gave a letter to the general consul for President Medina to embrace peace. We are demanding strong action from the international community that must give a warning that this kind of situation will not be tolerated.
The Haitian Diaspora is following closely the issue very seriously and is preparing to propose a series of action that may hampered Dominican Republic at some level.
